Fiddler Magazine/Summer 2003 edition:

You've probably heard Larry Franklin's fiddling, even if you didn't know it was him.  He played with the western swing band Asleep at the Wheel from 1984 to 1991, and also works as a studio musician in Nashville, where he's played on CDs by some of country music's biggest stars, including Reba McIntire, Trace Adkins, Kenny Chesney, Shania Twain, Hank Williams Jr., and Vince Gill.  Now & Then is his solo debut, and as you might expect for someone with his resume, the playing is excellent throughout.  Franklin grew up in a fiddling family--his father Louis Franklin and great uncle Major Franklin were legendary Texas fiddlers--and his original compositions show that even though he's spent years in Nashville, he's a Texas musician through and through.  The music covers a wide range of fiddling styles, from the bluegrass flavored "Wilowen Hornpipe" to the twin fiddle western swing of "Franklin Swing" to the lively "Polkamon."  Another track includes a charming 1962 performance of "Cotton Patch Rag" from the then nine-year-old fiddler.  Even when he plugs in his electric fiddle and rocks out, as he does on "Mando-Blast" and the wah-wah pedal-drenched "Wah-Toosie," Franklin's down home roots shine through.  The quality of the original tunes and the exemplary playing on Now & Then are ample proof that the Franklin family's reputation for producing great fiddlers is secure for another generation.

Larry's favorite fiddles are a German made 5-string (maker unknown) he acquired in 1978 from Barcus-Berry and two French violins from the 1800's made by Salazard (commonly called Salzer's). He also has a Red Steeley fiddle (Texas fiddle maker), a German Strad copy made by Theodor Kreutzer (his first fiddle given to him by his Dad), a Barcus Berry Stephane Grappelli model, a Sunburst Barcus-Berry 5-string, another German Strad copy, and a Chin-cello (an octave down violin setup by George Chestnut, Nashville. Call him at 615-730-7452 and get one). His 5-string and one of the Salzer’s were setup with Joe Mills microphones and Baggs Bridge pickups by Fred Carpenter (The Violin Shop, Nashville).

He has an assortment of Bows but mainly uses a Conrad Gotz, an Albert Nurenberger and an Ebony Bow that once belonged to Major Franklin.

His acoustic mandolin's are a 1993 Gibson F-5L and a 1953 EM-150 w/pickup

He has two Schwab 5-string electric mandolins.
